TV wrap-up
I was thinking about about doing a post on my life as it's been a while, but then I thought that I'm not terribly interested in talking about me at the moment. For those of you who are interested, here it is in short form: a) After a terrifically crappy year, I managed to graduate (finally!). b) I moved to Pasadena. c) I'm now officially over-educated and under-employed and facing a truly terrible job market. d) I'm spending my days job-searching, which generally involves people not calling me back and watching a lot of TV, 'cause what else am I going to do? I was sick all last week, so I REALLY watched a lot of TV. And that segues into my wrap-up.

New (to me) shows that I've been watching and thoughts there of:

Weeds, through part of Season 2 - This is a odd sort of show. I kind of like it, but I'm not sure that I like any of the characters in it, which is why I haven't continued watching. Nancy seems perpetually smug. The plot is engaging though.

The West Wing, Season 1 - Surprisingly, I love this show. I didn't think that it would be my kind of thing, but it really makes full use of Aaron Sorkin's considerable talents. I love the witty dialogue and most of the characters (Mandy and Sam being the notable exceptions). Charlie is AWESOME. I love Josh and I really love the Josh and Donna dynamic. Just about every supporting character is good, even the one-shots. I look forward to seeing the rest of the show. I am mostly unspoiled, so normal spoiler-phobia applies.

Sports Night - After seeing The West Wing, I decided to follow through on all those VM4 recommendations from so long ago and finally decide whether Dan or Casey is cooler. And my answer is ... I don't know. I do know that Dana's dating plan sucks. This show was uneven in a lot of ways, but it managed to strike greatness every now and then. Dan's on-air apology was the moment that convinced me to go on with watching.

Mad Men, 1 1/2 episodes - I realize that rampant sexism is kind of the point with this show, but UGH. When I despise nearly every character, it makes it really difficult to watch. Don't know if I'll bother with the rest of it.

True Blood - Speaking of uneven shows ... I loved a good two-thirds of the first season and then the season finale just fell flat. I like how this show doesn't feel like a knock-off of every other vampire show/book out there. It has a lot of unique elements and many of the characters are very engaging. At the same time, there's a fairly heavy trash element. Vampirism has equaled sex since ever, but there's sex and then there's made-for-cable sex. It's certainly approaching if not firmly ensconced in soft-core porn. Jason alone - good Lord, boy. Because of the crappy finale, I'm no longer sure how I feel about the show as a whole, but there was a lot of good stuff in it. And sex.

Shows that I mean to catch up on soon: Dexter, Battlestar Galactica, the rest of The West Wing, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

What have you all been watching?

Weeds is good, but odd, I agree.

I have yet to do The West Wing, but Sports Night is awesome. Dan's on-air apology is what sold me on the show too.

Catch up on other stuff! Or get a job, either one will make me happy.

I'm kind of shocked that I'm watching The West Wing before you. That never happens! Anyway, you should try it. I'm really enjoying it.

Dexter, Chuck, Pushing Daisies, I need to catch up on Heroes and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and then I'll add Party Down in March and hopefully Washingtonienne once it's picked up *knock on wood*. I'll also watch Cupid whenever that is..Nothing else I'm gung ho about..

Congratulations on graduating, but sorry about the how the job hunt is going. Are you still trying to look in your field or are you branching out to other job opportunities that interest you?

I've given up on Heroes. I got behind and realized that I didn't care. What's Washingtonienne? I don't think that I've even heard of that one.

I'm not sure that I have much of a field - or at least not one that translates naturally to the real world from academia. Which is part of the problem. I'm still looking for a job that uses at least portions of my training and not, say, waitressing, but my focus is fairly broad. I'd take just about any coding job at this point that was offered. There's just nothing out there.

Washingtonienne is a HBO pilot, produced by Sarah Jessica Parker in which Jason has a lead role. It's actually the only male lead role, with 3 female leads and he'd be in every episode. Still waiting for it to be officially picked up though. *knocks on wood*

The HBO series is "extremely loosely" based on the book, said Parker, who optioned the rights for it as her "jumping-off point" for a tale of three 28-year-olds working on the Hill: intern Jackie, her college pal April and workaholic Laura, a conservative, small-town girl. The only character with any hint of Cutler is Jackie, who fails in New York and flees to D.C., landing on April's doorstep. "She's kind of floating, not focused like the others," Parker said. "She doesn't understand the protocol of the city. Her moral compass is a little different." Jason Dohring will play Spencer, a senior legislative assistant for the same senator for whom Jackie works.

Head Writers Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz appear to be taking Cutler's story in a somewhat different direction. Cutler's blog detailed her sexual conquests (bareback) in D.C., which got her fired after her name was made public and sued for invasion of privacy. The show, per the HR, will center on the aforementioned "three smart, sophisticated 28-year-old girls working on the Hill."

Yeah, I'm not too surprised in Pasadena unfortunately. I know AT&T has a Network Operations Center in San Diego and most likely a lot of their software tools are built or customised in house , but I don't know where that software group is located...

The L.A. area isn't bad - not as good as the Bay Area, but not too bad either. A lot of stuff is located here. Only ... almost no one's hiring.

YAY TV!

I loved The West Wing! It's not really a show to fangirl, but it is just so damn awesome. The cast, the writing, the feel-goodness of it. AWESOME. I am surprised that you (and PC) haven't seen it before, but I guess you guys were in school when it was out. (I never watched tv when I was in school, so I am thrusting that characteristic on to you as well). Random story: I had just had my first child the day before The West Wing premiered. I had the tv on in the hospital room and The West Wing pilot was so talk-talk-talky that it bored me to sleep! heh. Of course, now I love it and blame my sleep on having just had major surgery, being doped up, and up all night with a newborn. :) I love Charlie too! And Josh! And the others. There are moments during the show that you just *know* you are watching Emmy-winning stuff. (I said that exact sentence the first time the show aired, before the actual awards were handed out, so. That isn't me being... cheeky or whatever.) The best thing about finding a new show is that you have multiple seasons to watch! It's a show I could watch again and again. There are some oddball facts/issues brought up that I still think about to this day.

I liked True Blood, but don't really feel the desire to watch next season. I love Eric (because I love the actor from Generation Kill, which is another thing you should watch- only 7 eps long! so no major commitment) and I love the bratty vamp at the end, but not the BSG, Star Trek lady and can't see the show going anywhere interesting (except for more Eric).

I watched the beginning of Weeds, but lost interest after the second or third season. My fave bit ever: the brother-in-law and the pot head accountant were debating what to call the taint. Have you seen that yet? The cleaning lady walks in and has the best line ever, but I don't want to spoil it for you. I get the mom wants to provide for her kids, and that this is all just a nonsense basis for a tv show but 1) why does she have to stay in the hella large house and 2) could she be a worse mother? It just got to be too depressing to watch (which is true of almost all HBO/Showtime dramas.)

Love Sports Night.

Watched an ep or two of Mad Men. That was enough for me. The bits about a pregnant woman smoking and a mom yelling at her kids for playing in the dry cleaning bag, because she didn't want her clothes messed up not because they could suffocate, were amusing, but not enough for me to stick around.

TSCC has had some fanfreakintastic episodes this season. And a couple of real snoozers.

Other shows- I liked the summer show Swingtown. I liked HBO's Generation Kill. I watched S1 of a UK show called Survivors. That was pretty awesome, but only 6 eps, so boo to the shortness. Also watch Friday Night Lights with much love. It's starts on network tv in a week or two. It has a very S1 feel. Love it! I watch Spn with dread but always end up enjoying it, and watch HIMYM with glee.

Damn, that is too much tv. :)

Oh, I forgot the shows I watch just to fold laundry: The Mentalist- entertaining enough but is getting a bit predictable, which happens with procedurals. And Leverage, which is like a new the A-team to me. The computer geek is the best thing about the show. He gets one or two funny lines a week. I should stop watching the show, but I really do need to watch something while folding laundry.

I also started watching The Unit this year. I had tried during the first season and it didn't stick, but this season has been wildly entertaining, if a bit unbelievable.

I didn't watch much TV while in college. Specifically, though, I seem to recall The West Wing conflicting with Buffy, so it was never even a contest.

I hate the bratty vamp in True Blood. I'll have to check out Generation Kill.

not enough for me to stick around
Yeah, that's a good way to sum up how I feel about Mad Men.

I LOVE HIMYM. It's just so consistently enjoyable.

Nice to hear from you! Sorry I've been so absent lately.

Mad Men -- same. I caught half of one episode and hated everyone. Since then people have told me it's awesome, and I'm considering watching again. I thought maybe it was just the episode I watched that made me hate it.

True Blood -- I had that problem too. It wasn't perfect, but I was loving the trashy fun, but then the ending came and my two favorite main characters (Tara and dog-boy-whose-name-I-forgot, although not really together) just fell apart as interesting people, in my mind. Plus, Bill just kind of sucks (heh) and him on fire was even worse, and Sookie's big heroics were just yarn worthy. None of the emotional resonance of, say, VM 1.22, and that's what this show really needed -- a tight conclusion.

Oh, and I haven't been watching anything, really, except the occasional HBO movie and a little HGTV.

Hell did freeze over, and I watched half of Gossip Girl tonight. Truth.

Yeah, I keep thinking that there must be more to it, but I don't know. 'Cause right now it seems that all the men are sexist pigs and the women are mostly weak.

Yes, very much so. They really flubbed it.

The only show in your list I've watched all the way through was Sports Night. And I adored it. I tried Weeds, West Wing and they just didn't grab me. I will try TruBlood when it hits DVR. I have read all the Sookie books and really like them so I'm hoping the actors manage to convey the essence of the novels.

Sorry to hear the job hunt has been difficult but if I've learned anything in life is that the hard parts eventually lead to the good parts. Here's hoping the good parts come soon.
gymble[info]gymble on January 13th, 2009 07:47 pm (UTC)
The West Wing is very talky, but I really like it. I'd suggest trying some more of it, but it may not be your thing.

I haven't read any of them so I can't judge how it measures up. But be warned that the show is kind of uneven.
